The holidays are an ideal time to spend time with friends and family, but it’s not quite what you would call a relaxing time of year. The hustle and bustle, from shopping to social gatherings to family get-togethers, can be incredibly stressful and leave you feeling overwhelmed during the holidays, and when you have someone you love to care for, your own tasks can be neglected.
Wondering how you can possibly get everything on your to-do list done in time for the holidays? Try the following tips to help you stay on task.
- Skip the shopping mall & shop virtual. Going out to a crowded mall can be challenging this time of year, especially when you have a frail senior in your care. Online shopping can be taken care of from pretty much anywhere, in the doctor’s office, late at night while watching TV, etc., and is far less stressful than struggling through the large holiday crowds.
- Make it a team effort. Too many presents to wrap? Don’t know how you’ll write out all of your holiday cards? Enlist the help of a friend or family member who can help wrap gifts. Set aside an afternoon to visit, sip hot chocolate, and write out all of your holiday cards together with your older family member helping in whatever way possible.
- Be discerning about “made from scratch.” Many people feel obligated to go overboard on meals during the holidays, but not everything on the table needs to be homemade. Choose one or two selections for your holiday menu that you enjoy making from scratch, and incorporate some microwavable or pre-made dishes to round out the table and save you some precious time.
Did you know an in-home caregiver can help with these holiday to-dos and many others for the older adults you love? Not only can we run errands like picking up groceries, prepare healthy meals, and help with gift wrapping and decorating the home, but we also love taking older adults out holiday shopping! Our caregivers are always available to make each day during the holiday season – and beyond – happier and brighter for the seniors we serve, while allowing family care providers to take much-needed time away from their care responsibilities.
